Lusod and Its People

The original settlers of Barangay Lusod were said to be descendants of the people from Tukukan, now part of Tinoc municipality but originally a village of Hungduan in the Ifugao Province. They belong to the Kalanguya tribe and speak the variety of Kalanguya dialect called Kib-al. The people of Lusod, as with the other Kalanguya groups, have no written history. Historical narratives, cultural and traditional practices, and other information such as genealogy have been orally passed down from generation to generation.

Recently, researches have been conducted to trace the genealogy of the Kalanguya people resulting in the publication of several clan books. One of, if not, the most comprehensive researches is the one conducted by the late James Cabanero, a son of the Kalanguya who settled in Antipolo, Rizal. He has compiled and published several clan books for the Kalanguya people including descendants who live in different parts of the Philippines and may not necessarily speak the Kalanguya dialect.

Due to search for greener pasture and education many of Lusod’s offspring have gone out to settle in other places like Baguio city, La Trinidad, Nueva Vizcaya, other provinces and some abroad.

For decades since its creation, Barangay Lusod was only linked to nearby towns and villages via its three main trail outlets: Lusod-Ba-ba-lac-Ambangeg trail, Lusod-Tawangan-Ballay trail and Lusod-Tinoc trail. It is accessible by long hours of hiking through these trails that traverse through steep mountain-sides and deep valleys. Commodities are manually transported into or out of the village by the villagers themselves. This manual hauling or transportation (komboy) of goods has been one of the villagers' income sources.

In 2003, a farm-to-market road was constructed extending the Ballay-Tawangan road to Lusod. It was only passable couple of years later but only to vehicles that can withstand the constant hammering of the rough and difficult terrain of the mountain road.
