Barangay Lusod
Lusod was created as an independent barangay from its mother barangay, Tawangan, on December 29, 1971 by Provincial Board Resolution No. 885 during the term of Mayor Octaviano Aroco of Kabayan. It has the largest land area among the thirteen barangays in the Municipality of Kabayan. It is the farthest barangay from the Poblacion being approximately 40 kilometers away and takes around eight to nine hours hike via its narrow, steep, winding and leech-infested foot trails and foot bridges that curl around Mount Pulag, the highest mountain in Luzon and the third highest peak in the Philippines.
This remote barangay is predominantly occupied by the Kalanguya tribe that claim origin and ancestry from Tinoc, Ifugao. The barangay is approximately 10 kilometers away from Tinoc, Ifugao and bounded on the north and west by Tawangan, Kabayan and the municipality of Tinoc, Ifugao; on the south by Bashoy, Kabayan and the municipality of Bokod; and, on the east by Tinoc, Ifugao and the province of Nueva Viscaya. Lusod has a total population of 794 based on the May 2010 NSO Census. Its 120 households are distributed among the following 29 sitios:
Etymology of Lusod
The original name of the place is Luhod which is a Kalanguya word meaning enclosure or fence that surrounds a house or a group of houses or even a community. Luhod was usually constructed to prevent pigs and cattle from destroying plants. It also used to be constructed during rituals such as padit, kiyad and kalang to prevent the animals that are about to be butchered from escaping. Luhod is also a term for fences that are constructed around a pit within the hunting grounds so that the wild pig or deer that is trapped may not escape. The word Luhod was later pronounced and spelled as Lusod by the Ibalois and since then has been registered that way up to the present. While the official name is Lusod, the Kalanguya people still pronounce it as Luhod. |
